The passport requirement does NOT apply to U.S. citizens traveling to or returning directly from a U.S. territory. U.S. citizens returning directly from a U.S. territory are not considered to have left the United States and do not need to present a passport. U.S. territories include the following: Guam, Puerto Rico, the U.S. Virgin Islands, American Samoa, Swains Island, and the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands. Other Travel Tips as of jan 23 every passenger needs a valid passport when traveling between the us and puerto rico. i have seen pictures of there it looks really nice msu is right........direct from the US to PR or the Virgin Islands and direct back by a US citizen.........No Passport Requiered. Look at her link to the State Department..... live in the US Virgin ISlands If you have a passport, take it with you always and if you do not have one - get one! Our daughter was in PR last week on business and did not take her passport. She was stopped going back to the US and given a bad time because she did not have her passport. So better to cover all bases as you never know what the guards will want - just like the continuing confusion over taking a bottle of water onboard that you bought AFTER security clearance. US Citizens do not need to carry a passport to travel to Puerto Rico or coming back from PR into the mainland USA. PR is a US territory thus traveling from the states to PR is just like traveling between any other states. A US State issued driver's license will be enough to get you there and back with no problem. However, and this is just my personal advice, it is not a bad idea to carry a passport (Or another valid US issued ID) which you can leave in your hotel room or safe place just in case your wallet is lost or stolen. That way you will have at least one valid ID that you can use to board the plane back home. I do this not only when I go to PR, but when I travel between Hawaii and the US mainland as well.
