If you had only one day in San Juan Puerto Rico where would you go? |
Travel Info I am taking a cruise and only have one day in San Juan. I would like to see something cool, do some good shopping or sample local cuisine. Any favorites that you have? I would love to hear about it. Travel Tips There are many things you can do in San Juan in one day. During the day I recommend you go to "El Morro" fort. If you want to take advantage of the day as much as possible then just walk through the fort without a tour guide so that you can choose what interests you and you don't have to waste time with a long tour. In terms of shopping there are hundreds of all sorts of little stores lining the streets. It's hard to tell you specifically which stores to go to because there are so many of them. The good thing is you get to experience San Juan while shopping rather than just walking through a mall where you can't enjoy any of the culture, scenery, or daily life. Regarding food there are a few particular places I can recommend: "The Parrot Club" -- latino bistro and bar "Aguaviva" -- seafood latin style "Dragonfly" -- asian cuisine "Tantra" -- Indian and puerto rican fusion cuisine (my personal favorite--they also serve houcha) **These first four restaurants are all on Calle Fortaleza #363 "Amadeus Cafe" -- Calle San Sebastian #106 (nouvelle puerto rican cuisine) **For real traditional Puerto Rican food ask around and stop by any shady looking cafe. Their appearance may not be particularly appealing but I guarantee any of them will have better puerto rican cuisine than a nicer restaurant. Ask around, the people are friendly and will surely to point you in the right direction. If you're into night life you can try "Senor Frog's." Most tourists coming off cruise ships go there during the night. There is good music, often times live bands, funny contests, and loads of people. It is in the lobby of "Pool Palace" on Calle Recinto Sur #330. You can also go to Pool Palace itself if you like playing pool. There are lots and lots of pool tables, bar, and music. It's also a lot of fun to wander the streets at night (accompanied!!!) and stop by several bars. Just follow the music :) I recommend a few bars: Baires, Nono's, Kudeta, Dakiti...ask around for directions; EVERYONE knows where these places are..EVERYONE ;) I can't think of anything else to advise...this is pretty much what i do when i go to san juan on the weekends. Drinking age is 18! (not that it matters...no one checks IDs...ever) HAVE FUN!! Source(s): Born and raised in Puerto Rico :D Other Travel Tips Old San Juan is the place for you to go. You'll have an opportunity to see El Morro (the old castle) and from there you can sample the local cuisine in some very nice restaurant of your choosing not far from the castle. You'll also be able to shop at some very trendy stores (including clothing and jewelry). Me-Puerto Rican You'll dock in Old San Juan usually. Your cruise ship may offer excursions. Typical excursions include going to the fort "El Morro," going to the Bicardi Factory, or shopping around Old San Juan. All are good for different reasons. If you like rum, the Bicardi tour is excellent-- interesting, informative, and the grounds are nice. The Fort is the typical thing to do and is interesting if you like that. Old San Juan can be explored easily-- and there is some good shopping. If you do that, you can take the public trolleys that run around the island. There are great restaurants around there-- most of them are excellent. Try the piragua, which can be purchased at the Paseo de la Princessa (it's like italian ice, kind of) as it's a regional delight. There is also casino gambling near the cruise landing. I might just spend the day exploring the island, taking advantage of the trolley, eating, shopping, and wandering. The only dodgey spot is on the far side of the island between the two forts-- other than that, it's completely safe and easy to wander and enjoy! Oh-- there are some cool art galleries, and the Butterfly People store is known for it's artistic collection of real preserved butterflies used in art. Pretty cool. Have fun! Old San Juan is where to go. It is located where the cruise ship piers are and depending on which line you go on you may not even need a cab to get to the town. If you are on Princess, you should be docked right on the town side. Otherwise it will be a short cab ride to town. The shopping is good, the architecture is like old world Europe. The area is very safe and friendly. If you want to try a local dish that is superb, make sure you try the Mufungo. This is a very regional dish made from fried plantains with garlic and then topped with anything you want from seafood to chicken or beef. There are many places to get this while there but i did eat at a restaurant also called Mofungo and it was located next to the Sheraton right near the cruise pier. I would go home. Otherwise I would go to Aguadilla, it's so awesome. Or Pi帽ones. This is a hard question....so many places. |
