If you have mexican centavos coins prior to 1970,can they be used in mexico today? |
Travel Info i seen in a travelers page that from 1970 to 1992 or something that all those coins in between are no good and not used anymore Travel Tips They cannot be used directly, but they can be exchanged for new pesos at a rate of 1000 old pesos (MXP, pre-1993) for 1 new peso (MXN, 1993 until today). One new peso is worth about $0.095 in US dollars today (almost 10 US cents). So, if you have a LOT of the pre-1993 pesos, you might consider exchanging them for new ones that you can spend. The Bank of Mexico has a page that explains this, and which includes a link to a list of all of the locations in Mexico where "demonitized" currency can be exchanged. From the page: http://www.banxico.org.mx/sitebanxicoing... "Domestic Currency Exchange Centers have been established in 563 commercial bank offices of 208 locations throughout the country... Any person may attend the exchange centers to ask for the following services... ...Exchange of demonetized currency by its equivalent amount with legal tender banknotes or coins." Source(s): Bank of Mexico info page: http://www.banxico.org.mx/sitebanxicoing... List of exchange centers: http://www.banxico.org.mx/sitebanxicoing... Other Travel Tips not worth anything They can be used for a coin collection. That's about it. The whole currency system changed during those years, so yes, they are worthless economically speaking. |
