Is is safe to vaction in Mexico?

We are really wanting to go to puerto vallarta and looking into renting a villa with a group of friends. We here that the police are very corrupt and even have friends that have had some trouble in different areas of Mexico. Is Puerto vallarta safe for Americans that don't know the culture and know very little spanish ?

If you're worried about culture shock, you may want to consider going to Cabo San Lucas, instead. A tour guide recently told us that 40% of Cabo is populated by North Americans. Also helps that Cabo was very beautiful, and has some great sportfishing.

I wasn't too happy with Puerto Vallarta, personally. Didn't necessarily feel "unsafe", it just rubbed me the wrong way. Source(s): Just got back from a Cabo, Matatlan, Puerto Vallarta cruise a couple weeks back.

I lived in southern California most of my life. I visited Tijuana several times. I learned to dress "poor". It seems that people that have money or look like they do are targeted for the corrupt people there. Whatever you do do not buy any prescription drugs, even if prescribed by a doctor. Alot of these people are arressted and then their families are extorted for money for many years before their loved ones are released. They can keep you for a very long time before taking you to court, it's not like the USA.
Stay on the "beaten path" - Vacation / Tourist areas.
Know your rights. Get the phone # of the U.S. consulate and U.S. embassy there in case you run into trouble.

DON'T DO ANYTHING STUPID!
let me tell you something. As a Mexican I find Puerto vallarta as a beautiful beach, it is not completely unsafe. If you dont know very much spanish try to learn it, because here, policeman are stupid, only poor people get to be police, and they can get you in trouble, specially if you dont speak the language !!!
Just be careful, if you want to visit a nice place you should go to Cancun, but it is kind of damaged right now because of hurricane Wilma.

i really recommend puerto vallarta, it is safe. these tourist cities rely on tourism so the government does their best to make tourist have a good impression, just try to stay out of trouble. some people think its ok to do illegal stuff because they are americans, that is wrong anywhere in the world. puerto vallarta has the feel of a mexican town, by the beach, and so much to do. have fun.
