Driving to Mexico from Toronto, any suggestion? read further?

Travel Info
I have been considering driving from Toronto, to Pt.Vallarta - I'am asking any of you out there, that have done this or know anyone who has - to give me some pointers! Thanks to all who help..

Travel Tips
Yes. Do not carry a gun. Make sure you have a good anti-theft device on your vehicle or drive a jalopy. Don't take anything with you that you cannot part with, because you will be stopped at the border and will go through several military check points. When they see something they want, they will take it. If you do get stopped and they ask you to get out of your vehicle, watch the guys who get into your vehicle to search it and do not let the others try to distract you from watching over your vehicle. The further you get away from the border, the nicer the people. Take a good Spanish dictionary with you if you do not know Spanish. Take a porta-pottie with you if possible. Take bottled water with you and do not drink their water or "iced" drink. Try to cook your own food, purchased in the US, while on your road trip until you get into civilization again. Take some anti-diarrhea and nausea medicine with you, because if you can't speak Spanish or are out in the boone docks, you will be in trouble. Other than that, there are several places along the way you will really enjoy and once you get to Pt. Vallarta you will love it. Take various types of clothing and a jacket for cool weather. Good luck and have a great time.

PS YES... do buy Mexican insurance because if you have a wreck while you are there, you will go to jail. You can get out of jail if you have Mexican insurance. If you have a wreck, it is always the tourists' fault. Buy your insurance on the US side and it is cheaper.

Others
Just a warning...some friends rented a vacation house in Vallarta and it was broken into and robbed while thye were in it. Best to stay at large, protected hotel.
Go south and follow signs-Mexico.
Be very careful.Mexican police will stop you and ask for mexican insurance.even if you have it they will want something else but will let you pay them about 50.00 to let you go.
That trip is across the entire US. It's a long, long way. Be prepared for the long drive and unexpected events. Take your time.
Driving in Mexico is not the same as driving in Canada or the States, you will require a Tourist Visa when you enter at the border, this is only good for 180 days, also you will need special car insurance which can be obtained before crossing the boarder, it is not safe to drive at night due to limited fencing of livestock, if you do decide to drive to PV, it's probably around 20 hours driving time from the Texas Boarder, your car should be in good dependable shape but I wouldn't drive anything too flashy. Take my advice Fly via commercial airlines its much safer and if you really want to drive in PV rent a car when you get there.
