Others Both latitude and longitude have a part in the question. This time of year, Puerto Vallarta by it's latitude (distance from the equator) will see a much longer day ... due to the tilting of the northern hemisphere away from the sun. In the summer, Chicago will have a longer day. Longitude also plays a factor. Put a globe under a light bulb, and turn it to see where the sun shines ... you will see that the cities that lie farther to the west will have light later than cities to the east. because the earth is round you dope, hense the actual difference in relationship to the sun is different around the world, yes even in the same time zones. Note sunset in NYC is earlier than in Lousiville KY but both are in the EST zone. I don't know which season you are referring to in your question. If it is winter in Chicago, sunsets occur before 5PM. However if it summer in Chicago, sunsets occur later than 8 PM. My map says that PV is on the border between Mtn time and Central time zones. PV is much further south than Chicago. This means that there is much LESS DIFFERENCE between sunrise & sunset times in the different seasons. If you go further south to the equator, the days are exactly 12 hours long, winter or summer. However the further north you go from the equator, the bigger the difference between sunrise & sunset times with the seasons. PV is located about 20 deg N Lat. Chicago is more like 41 0r 42 deg N. Lat. Furthermore, PV is located at the extreme western edge of the Central time zone; Chicago is at the extreme eastern edge. These two factors plus the season of the year account for any differences in sunrise or sunset time that you have noticed between the two cities. Could be that its that much further West than Chicago. The Time Zone don't run Due North and South they Zig Zag around a bit. |
