Sharks in Puerto Vallarta? |
Travel Info I went snorkling at Los Arcos and hit my knee on the huge rock. I started bleeding and then I freaked out because I thought a shark might smell my blood, so I frantically started swimming back to the boat. My snorkeling guide told me not to worry because he said that there are no sharks in Puerto Vallarta. I didn't believe him and got back on that boat. I wasn't about to find out! He told me I had been watching too many Hollywood movies. Has anyone seen any sharks swimming around Puerto Vallarta? Travel Tips Many of the answers are right and wrong....... Like the one guy said, if its ocean, there are sharks somewhere around. People and tourists, have been attacked in PV and Acapulco and just about anywhere there are beaches and people in the world. The key as others have noted, is to trust the locals. They don't make any money when the tourist gets eaten....... They know where to swim and most importantly what to do when there is a problem. When they say that there are no sharks, thats not true, but its probably true that there's almost no chance whatsoever of being attacked. You need to be realistic, that's all. The guy who claimed that sharks are repelled by human blood, well I don't believe that BS for a second and you won't see me trying to prove it.... But if you are informed and careful, you probably have a greater chance of being run down on Ventura Blvd. by a Mercedes without lights driven by a drunken Paris Hilton than eaten by a shark in PV...... Others There are no sharks where they bring you. If you went fishing you may catch one. Sharks could be in any water off shore, but that doesn't mean they're lurking out there waiting to eat someone. You can't live your life in fear, the locals usually know what you can expect. You completely over reacted. Even if there were any sharks in the water near by when you got there they would have disappeared pretty quickly as soon a large group of people jumped into and started splashing around in the water nearby to them. That action messes with their sonar making them unable to feed so they leave. Most sharks you find in coastal waters (like near Cabo) are pretty small (maybe 1- 2ft in length) and are either bottom feeders (like Rays) or live on fish. The smell of human blood actually repels them. You have to work pretty hard to get a shark to come anywhere near a group of humans (like in the specialized shark dives). But you arent the only only who feels that way, I am often asked if it is dangerous for a woman to go swimming during her period for the same reason. 8 years organizing dive and snorkel tours in Baja and the Caribbean There is one species of shark in Puerto Vallarta that is extremely pesky and dangerous. They swarm around near the beaches and will make their move on you when you least expect it. They are known to prey on tourists who are not familiar with them. They do not seem dangerous when you first see them which is what makes them so terrifying. They seem normal like any other thing you would see. It is important to stay away from them at all costs which usually means heading in the other direction as quickly as possible. You can get more information on this species by searching the web under "timeshare sharks". Yes and No, the fishers sometimes catch some sharks fare away from the coast. About any incident close to the beaches I dont know. But, however, if You are bleeding it is allways better to treat the injury, because there are microorganisms which could enter and cause any damage. Especially during the rainy season many bacterial live gets into the ocean because of the rivers. Another important thing is: Dont become crazy within the water. An accelerated heart rythm is a sign of potential victim for the sharks. I will invetigate it further with the local fishing department and next time when some one asks, have an more detailed answer. In the mentioned blog there is something about the dangerous oceans arround Vallarta. PS: One guy wrote about the TIMESHARING SHARKS, yes, these are really dangerous using any method to convert people in customers. Be aware of them ! |
