What's The Difference Between Montreal And Quebec City? |
Travel Info Is there any english in Quebec city? Are people nicer (or not.) Is there anything to do downtown? Is it full of seperatists? Travel Tips Quebec is a quaint small-town with a lot of history, mainly for tourists and politicians. Montreal is a big cosmopolitan city. If you are concerned with separatists, you probably should go to Disney World instead, travel in foreign countries is best left to open-minded people. Others Montreal is much more likeable -S Big Difference. Montreal is a big city, with small city pockets. Lots of great neighbourhoods, restaurants, attractions, and the music scene is the bomb! You will be hard pressed to find someone that will not speak English to you. Quebec City is a small city. Very quaint, and walkable. I didn't spend much time in New QC, but I'm sure there is lots to do. Old QC is lovely - especially in the spring/summer. You can walk everywhere. Again people are friendly, and will gladly speak English to you. Either way, wherever you go - greet the server, hostess, clerk, whatever - with "Bonjour". They can easily tell from that that you are English, but appreciate that you are respectful. No problems. As for separatists - I don't generally have political conversations with people I don't know. I wouldn't worry wbout it. have fun! Montreal is the business centre of Quebec, with many major corporations having their headquarters here. It is very hustle and bustle, and reminds me of Boston or Chicago, only with French signs and language everywhere. Montreal is a pretty bilingual city, with both English and French being spoken by the staff in restaurants, hotels, bars, and other tourist areas. Quebec City is much more of a tourism town. It has a business sector, but its focus is the tourists who come to the region to see the architecture, whale watching, and its European charm. Quebec City is also the political capital of the province. The best comparison I can make of Montreal vs Quebec City would be that they are similar to Manhattan (NYC) vs Albany. As for the separatist issue, that subject keeps returning during certain election campaigns, and we do have a separatist party in both provincial (Parti Quebecois) and federal (Bloc Quebecois) politics, but the last election showed that the people are much more concerned with health, public safety, and infrastructure than with whether we stay part of Canada. About security I travelled some places in USA where I feel 100 times more unsafe than any place in Quebec. About separatists, some people out of here seem to associate them with war or so. Some medias in Canada like to exagerate... In 1970 there was a crisis with a hostage killed by a little group of violent separatists, but they were alone and all people condemned them and Quebec's province never experienced any other violent incident since then. Here separatists (we rather call them independantists) are people who would like to separate pacifically from rest of Canada, but keeping good relationship with them. Quebec did referendum about it twice and it was really calm for a subject that could break down the Canada, no physical harm was done. Why separation ? Quebec's people feel a lot different from rest of Canada (and you maybe feel it a little while visiting), and rest of Canada is often thinking of Quebecers as crybabies. Not a good basis for sane relationship... But lately people tend to forget a little about it and concentrate on more major issues as my fellow before me just said. And for visitors you won't see/feel any difference between a separatist and a federalist :) Quebec's people are very friendly. Other Answerers well explain the difference. Montr茅al is full of immigrants and culturally is very diverse; Qu茅bec City quite opposite. But, actually, politically Qu茅bec City is not so much separatist. The heavily separatist areas are more in rural areas around the province and easterly suburbs of Montr茅al. There was just a provincial election and the separatist party came in a distant third place. |
