Why is the language in france different from the language in quebec? |
Travel Info Why is the language in france different from the language in quebec? Travel Tips Je ne sais pas. Others Quebec french originates from a combination of Acadian and colloquial french from the 18th century. Where in France their language was stylized in the 19th century when their language rules were set down based upon proper french. Why is Britannic English different than American English? It just evolved differently. Why is the English in the U.K. (and Canada, for that matter) different from American English? There are quite a large variety of reasons, and many of those are mostly what I assume to be the truth based on what I know of language evolution in general. The first basic idea is that Quebec (in fact, then it was Canada) was colonized by the French in the 1500 and 1600, mostly. When the English won and took over in the 1760s, France mostly cut contact with the remaining French people in Canada. So what happened is that in France, the language evolved in one direction, while in Canada, it stayed much closer to what the French spoke in the 17th century (or so historians tell us) There is also the basic distinction that Canada and France are different cultures facing different realities, so the vocabulary itself grew different. In Canada, we had to come up with more words to describe our winter climate, and everything that came with it. We also borrowed many words from the Native tribes, not to mention a lot of English. I would tend to say that today an educated person from Quebec and an educated person from France would be quite able to understand each other, both having had to expand their horizons beyond their own little part of the world, and also because of the greater ease to communicate with other cultures. But if you take a person from an older generation, who comes from a remote and very rural region, wether in France or Quebec, it will be difficult to understand them. I live in Quebec, and languages fascinate me. |
