I'm moving to Hull (Gatineau) Quebec. What's it like there? |
Travel Info I am english speaking so I plan to work in Ottawa. I'm a parent with two small children who lives in Toronto but finds that the pace of life is too fast here and the cost of living too high. Travel Tips All I can say is that you're going to need to learn French or else you'll hate it there and will feel like an outsider. Others First....tell me you have a job in Ottawa, if not,you are going to find it hard to get one if you don't speak French. Also if you are going to live in Hull and work in Ottawa, you will be paying more income tax. Next how old are your children. If they are of school age,the will have to go to french emersion. Over all The ottawa/gatineau region is a wonderful place to live, clean, slower paced but not as cheap to live as you think. I moved here from Toronto 13 years ago for some of the same reasons you wish to move and I love it here, but it will be hard if you don't know french, so you will need to learn it quickly. Hope this helps French will make your life easier, but i do know english speaking people living there, that we visit regularily. Many people speak both languages, but finding work would be more difficult without the second language. If you live in the Aylmer section of Gatineau it is predominantly English. If English is you first language then you children can be educated in English. If it is not your first language (i.e. you spoke Spanish or Mandarin etc) then the Quebec government will want your kids to be educated in French. The provincial taxes are higher in Quebec, as well as the drivers licences and car registration. The cost of housing is cheaper. The municipal transportation is similar in cost and you can use your bus pass on either side of the river. Ottawa/Gatineau is a great place to live, but it is a lot colder in the winter than Toronto. |
