Where should a first time visitor stay in Montreal?

Travel Info
Seeking a nice hotel, close to the action, tourist destinations, shops, restaurants, nightlife, etc. This is for a short weekend trip in the summertime. Thanks

Travel Tips
Depending on what you are looking for and your budget...
There are many trendy boutique hotels close to old montreal like the St. Paul or the Nelligan there is the W hotel which is very hip and has a cool bar\lounge too. Nothing is far in Montreal, but closer to downtown/mainstream shopping is the Sofitel ...or a lot of people like the Vogue, which is also right downtown and even has a rooftop pool that where locals go for a good "cinq a sept" (that means 5-7 which means happyhour!) in the summer...Or if you want to be close to the cool Saint Laurent strip with nice shopping in boutiques and funky restos, there is the Godin...but the big scandal there is that I dont think they have a liquor license...if that matters to you!
