What are the best places to visit in Quebec and Montreal during a week-long vacation?

Travel Tips
We had fun in Quebec City with few good meals. I recommend taking the walking tour and carriage ride. The Chateau Frontenac tour should be interesting. There are quite a few shops and restaurants in the Old Town. We had fun just strolling around there during the day and at night (see pictures below).
In Montreal, again there are lots to do around the old town. Take the river cruise. There are fireworks show twice a week with music and different themes. Definitely go to the Olympic Park (take the inclined elevator up to the top of the Olympic Tower) and visit nearby Biodomes, Insectarium and wonderful Botanical Garden. The Chinese garden is just gorgeous (also see pictures below). We enjoyed the City Tour on the bus. They also have Museum of Fine Arts which was free. Again, it was fun walking around the old city both during the day and at night. We also heard that the light show at the Notre Dame was supposed to be good. If the Flower and Garden is still in town, I would recommend to go there too.
Have a great trip. Source(s): http://travel.yahoo.com/p-travelguide-75...

Other Travel Tips
It would be better to get up to Quebec City and then take a rental car from there up north, through Ile d'Orleans and Charlevoix, an area of extreme scenic beauty, with lovely Quebecois houses and delightful inns and restaurants. You will think you are in rural France. If you reach Tadoussac, there is whale-watching cruises.

The secret of eating in Quebec is the "Casse-croutes" or roadside snackbars which sell hot dogs, chips and such. You will be amazed at how good inexpensive food can be. Truck-stops are also great for full-sized meals.

You can find little shops which sell home-made paper implanted with real flowers and such. These make wonderful souvenir gifts.

Bon voyage!!!
If you are going to Quebec City, you may want to travel a little bit North, just about an hour's drive to Montmorency Falls. It truly is a pretty place to visit. Taller than niagara Falls, at Montmorency falls you take the cable car up to the falls and come back, if possible, down the stairs. Take lots of pictures!
