Etiquette in Quebec? |
Travel Info I am English, living in France for three years and was amazed at how long it took for people to invite you to 'tutoyer'. I just wondered if it was the same in Canada. I find the informality there so refreshing and outside of Quebec people normally introduce themselves using their first names. I can't believe it is quite so stuffy there - is it? Travel Tips It's strange, I've lived in Quebec my whole life and still haven't learned the rules. It is extremely rare that someone in Quebec will asked to be addressed by their last name (Mr. or Mrs.), but this doesn't mean that it's okay to "tutoyer" them. For instance, children call their teachers by their first name, but undoubtedly use "vous" The only people who I have ever addressed by their last name are very elderly people, or people of really high stature who need to be treated with deference. So far, in a work scenario, I have been expected to vousvoyer people whenever I was in a temp job (even the receptionist), but if I was permanent I was expected to tutoyer everyone, including my boss. The basic rule is that you shouldn't be shy about using peoples' first names in Quebec, but if you are ever unsure, use vous, and chances are high that the individual you are addressing will be touched, but will correct you. Others i live in quebec /unfortunally/ haha well no..i didnt know that its that way in France in quebec ..it s normal ,i call my teachers 'Vous' but ..people are freindly and ,I work a macdonald's and i'm talking with the clients ..like 70%of time ,with 'Tu' hope i answered ur question loll My American lover says that here in Quebec it is worse - especially for Americans - than in France. |
