Quebec Accent? |
Travel Info what does the Quebec accent sound like? which countries or regions influenced the Quebec accent? thanks Travel Tips Actually this is a good question, Im a Quebecois myself and Im please to tell you! The accent comes from the arrival of Jacques Cartier in 1534. When the French lost the battle against the english around in the 1600's the english took power over the french community and cities were pretty mixed with french and english and french people used english words and slangs in order to communicate with them. Futhermore the majority of the arrivants were working for their land..so the lack of education made the world of bit ruffer for them..and resulted in this accent. many regions in quebec tough have different sort of accent perhaps the strongest is probably in gaspesia..if you know french a bit ..you'll understand absolutly nothing there!! Others It's called French. The person above me has given a very thorough answer. I only want to add the link below, which will take you to a website where you can listen to people speaking any language from anywhere in the world. You can hear someone from Montreal speaking English, or people from Rimouski or Montreal speaking French. It might help give you a bit of an idea. Oh, and I'll be a bit picky and correct some of the previous answer's historical data by saying that the French lost Quebec/Canada to the English in 1760, not the 1600s. http://accent.gmu.edu/browse_language.ph... One might in a way compare Quebec French with Parisian French like Swiss German is to Munich German. Old stock Quebeckers (called "pur laine") mostly migrated from the northwest of France whilst Acadians that populated New Brunswick migrated from more central and southern parts. And the Acadian accent is even more difficult to understand than the Gaspesie. Frenchmen arrived first in enough numbers to displace Native- Americans as did the English later. Both European cultures had legal marriages with Native Americans and traces of that is in the cultural language all share. It would be a mistake to think one is more ethnically pure than another. Rather it is a trinity but pronounced 'Quebec'. |
