Travel Info Cn any1 giv me info abt the queenstown to glenorchy road?? Travel Tips It is hands down the most stunning drive I have ever done in my life. It is so picturesque. You will not believe how amazing it is - very dreamlike. The road is pretty winding, but it is very easy to drive and it takes about 30ish minutes. I wish I were there right now. Source(s): I lived in Queenstown for a year and had friends in Glenorchy. Other Travel Tips Right along the shore of Lake Wakatipu. Check http://www.aamaps.co.nz for a (!) map. This road leads to the area where a great deal of Lord of the Rings was filmed. Its a dead end insofar as you have to turn around and come back after visiting Glenorchy. You cannot continue on to another town. It leads to the start of a walking(hiking) track, the Routeburn track which goes through to The Divide near Milford Sound (3 day walk). It also leads to Paradise which is just past Glenorchy - this bit IS a gravel road though. Other places have Hell - NZ has Paradise. You cannot go too far past Glenorchy without a 4-wheel drive. It includes fords over streams and very rough gravel after Glenorchy. I managed to take my van about as far as the ford that was used in a battle scene in LOTR. when I was last there in 2004. As one of the other answers has told you - its a very windy road that runs along the edge of Lake Wakatipu. The views over the lake are wonderful and there are many places along the way where you can stop to take pictures, have a picnic, go fishing - even swimming if you are willing to brave the cold water. Its a much easier drive now that the road has been sealed. If you look at older guide books (10 yrs or more) it will be listed as gravel for part of the way. Glenorchy itself is not a big town - it has the usual tourist type shops, cafes, a couple of pubs and the ubiquitous adventure tourism operators. The coffee in the organic cafe is wonderful. I lived in NZ for 20 years - mostly in the south of the South Island. I know Queenstown well. |
