Does any one know anything about Kazakhstan? |
Travel Info What kind of country is that? What language they speak? Travel Tips Oh yes....I've heard about Kazakhstan. It's the Central Asian country that was once the Kazakh Soviet Socialist Republic of the Soviet Union (existed from 1922 to 1991). Though the oil-rich Kazakhstan is about four times the size of Texas and as large as all of Europe (without the European Russia?), it is very sparsely settled. The popularion is over 40% Kazakh and over 35% Russian, with the remaining 25% for the 100+ nationalities. The capital of that country is Astana, and the largest city is Almaty (Alma-Ata). Kazakhstan's government is a republic, with Nursultan Nazarbayev as the President and Karim Masimov as the Prime Minister. The semi-desert terrain extends west to east from the Caspian Sea to the Altay Mountains and north and south from the plains of Western Siberia to the oases and deserts of Central Asia. Kazakhstan shares borders with Russia, Uzbekistan, China, and Turkmenistan. The climate is humid continental with hot summers and colder winters. The tenge is used as the currency of Kazakhstan. As for the language for Kazakhstan, Kazakhs speak Kazakh as the state language. Russian is also used, and it's spoken by a large Russian minority. The Kazakh language is written in the Cyrillic alphabet, which is also used for Russian, Ukrainian, and Bulgarian. You may think of Borat every time you hear about Kazakhstan, please bear in mind that the citizens in the real Kazakhstan don't drink horse urine and keep women in cages- as what the fictional movie character claims. (Although I haven't seen "Borat", I've heard about the horse pee drink and women in cages from one magazine article.)
