Do more gilrs or boy get adopted from russia? |
Travel Info i am doing a project on russia and i cant find it any where else please help. Travel Tips I used to host families of Americans who would come to Russia to adopt kids and to my surprise there were more boys than girls adopted in between the ages of 7 and 12. Others Well, I'm afraid the answer is boys. The reason for this is highly cultural. Russians believe, rightly or wrongly, that having a girl is a treasure given by God. The common belief is that boys are more common, and statistics bear this out, but only by the smallest statistical variance. For these cutural reasons, girls are less likely to be placed for adoption. Alot of the kids in orphanage aren't there because they don't have parents. Usually, when the parents have drug or alcohol problems, or a simple lack of desire to raise a child, the child is placed in an orphanage. They may stay there until it is evident that no relative will express wishes to care for the child. Only then, may a child be offered for adoption. Often, to get to that point, a 'genetic disorder' or developmental problem will be diagnosed for a child, when it doesn't exist, so the adoption can proceed through procedural channels. Without this "diagnosis", the search for a relative can take forever, or the state may wait for the relatives to say 'yes'. Adopted children from Russia are usually fine, although are likely to show delayed development, physically, mentally, and emotionally. This is because there are few employees in orphanages, and social interaction with a child is at a bare minimum. After being placed with a loving family, the children normally progress extremely well, and catch up with their peers in a few years. We have a doctor here in Lexington that specializes in examining children of foreign adoption. Such an examination can help recognize problems common among adopted children, such as Fetal Alcohol Syndrome. Currently no international adoptions of Russian children are being allowed. The government is requiring all adoption agencies to re-certify their credentials to meet new law requirements passed recently. Hopefully, adoptions can resume soon, after the government review of the procedures. This is certainly more than you asked for, but I hope it helps. Experience travelling and living in Russia, married to a Russian, fluent Russian speaker, and experience helping families adjust their adopted children to life here in Kentucky. It is boys, I don't really know why.. if I had to adopt a kid, I would adopt a girl, because I know girls are more calmer.. but surprisingly, boys get adopted more.. =( boys actually |
