Leaving for Russia tomorrow, any advice? |
Travel Info I am an american student, and I am going to Russia to study Russian language for 5 weeks at a Russian University. The professor who is going with us has been a bit lackadaisical and we haven't really been apprised of much besides the basics (How much money to bring, to pack warm clothes, etc.) I have so many questions about the culture! Can anyone recommend a site with general information for foreign students in Russia? Are there any Russians who'd be willing to answer a few questions (either here or on AIM - my sn is "Shpax0r")? Any major cultural differences I should be aware of to prevent misunderstanding? I'm kind of operating under the assumption that I don't yet know enough Russian to be able to accidentally say something offensive. Travel Tips Hi ! Welcome To Russia! I won't give you any general advice because you have already a bunch of it. If you have any specific Q or you need help don't hesitate to ask me! Speaking about gifts, it's really good to bring smth, which is somehow connected with the history of the USA or your State, some symbols. You don't need to take any food, as in major Russian cities you can buy everything!!! What city and University are you going? Source(s): from MOSCOW :-) Other Travel Tips Bringing them booze is a good idea they all drink like fish in Russia. Tips very important not to go out at night alone and not carry a lot of funds away from youth gatherings Federation ,But respected science students be prepared for cold showers! and standing in line? look at it as an adventure... maybe bring a little first aid kit? I don't know that simple bandaids and anticeptics are so easy to find Vwi dolga stayal vochereedyee?? Did you stand in line long? Looche pozdna chem neekogda? better late than never forget the bourbon... bring a nice book or something they might keep for a long time... Perhaps some great chocolate!!!! would be appreciated by all ages I bet the creation museum near kentucky has some cool books in Russian http://www.answersingenesis.org... Take some soap with you because I don't think they have any over there. Because all the ones that are here don't know how to use it cause they all have B/O. (in L.A. that is) 1st:buy Lonely Planets Russia and a phrase book if you feel you don't know enough to be competent and confident.Don't dress or act like a tourist, don't be loud in public.Try to stay away from tourist areas unless you are going with your hosts. Most Russians do enjoy a tipple, so the Bourbon might be fine for the man of the house.Take little cash.Use ATMs with care.Traveller's Cheques might be a good option (ask your fave Travel Agent). When it comes to food:"don't judge a book by it's cover".Check Russian Customs if you will be able to take fruit into Russia. Most fruit is available there except possibly some exotic Tropical fruits,eg.Mangos,Star Fruit,Lychees etc.For the Lady of the house a Table Cloth with a US/KY motif?Travel very light !You can buy clothes of every description there.Don't forget to take "Babushka"s home for your family and friends.Take extreme care when going out of crowded areas.Russian Cities are dangerous places for Americans and Westerners. There are toiletries there just like in the US.Supermarkets should be well stocked but the Brands will be unfamiliar.you can get anything on the Blackmarket. If you have any trouble buying things you need and have the "dough" fly over to Helsinki.Your jaws will drop.Don't trust the Russian Post.Take care.Good luck. |
