Travel Info Help please! Travel Tips There were Semyorka and two Sputniks launched by USSR in 1957: Sputnik 1 was launched October 4 Sputnik 2 with a dog Laika launched November 3. However, Russians did not begin the space race between USA and USSR, but Americans did by launching "fruit flies" in space beginning in 40s.
