Is not the correct answer for "What is the tallest mountain in Russia" Mt.El'brus? |
Travel Info I thought so, but for this awnser I was given a thumbs down. In fact 5 other people chose Communism Peak as the BA. The person was using an outdated atlas. Not only is that no longer the correct name, but it's in the independent nation-state of Tajikistan. Why do so many people continue to confuse the Russian Federation with the old USSR? Just a couple of months ago sombody I met was shocked to learn that Russians do indeed celebrate Christmas or that they can worship in the Russian Orthodox faith (other faiths as well). Again old Soviet attitudes and a poor understanding of modern current events. Travel Tips Peoples lack of education about Russia. Remember the USSR for almost 40 years was considered an evil empire that might nuke us any day (the cold war). Not much was taught about the USSR in school. Nor is it today. Others Am....most of the information was printed during the soviet era, so it has a peculiar format. Russians have Christmas only in january as well as an "old New Year" on the 13th of the same month. Its just a tradition that allows you to party for the most months of january and february. Good comments - I agree. Geography education has not always been a strong area for Americans. There should be more geography jeopardy or quiz shows on TV, online and in popular media. You are correct, the highest point in Russia and Europe is Mt El'brus. As you and I both know, the Communism Peak was NEVER the tallest mountain in Russia. There are quite a few wrong or incomplete answers voted as BA. |
