Travel Tips
I'm quite appaled with people suggesting performers like Zhasmin or Dima Bilan as examples of solemn music. Zemfira fits good enough though. All in all, if you don't mind the flavour of the 80'ies one would recommend some older Russian Rock to you. Say, something by Kino, DDT, Krematoriy, Alisa, Nautilus Pompilius, etc. The majority of their songs, those dating back to late 80'ies in particular. Something by Igor Talkov would be quite fine as well.

Among the more recent popular performers, Dolphin seems to be renowned for composing melancholic songs. It is recommended to check the albums that were released after 1999, since the earlier ones are filled with rap, and are rather aggressive, even though the lyrics are decent. Another good band in this respect would be Fleur, which is actually a Ukrainian band, but they sing solely in Russian.

There is also a whole barrage of various underground acts that specialise on being solemn and melancholic, but you would have been aware of them if you were interested in that kind of thing.

Oh, and don't forget the Orthodox chants, some seriously solemn and tragic stuff there. Source(s): Older stuff:

no
Yes. Try Vishu Tebya by Alena Visotskaya. Kak Ti Menye Nuzhen by Jasmin. Otpuskayu by Maksim and the hit now Tsvretok ee Nozh. Uletayu by A-studio. Ya Budoo Zhdat.

Tatu is not the only good singer around lots actually. There is A-studio, Alsu, Maksim, Kraski, Elena Tepyeyelva. For men, Dima Bilan is my favorite. There is a rock inspired song Yesyo Lubloo also by A-studio which is also a hit in Russian speaking countries. Super Cool.
Go to Europa plus' website, lots of russian and english songs.

I travel frequently to Russia and the CIS.
Well, there is KiNO, its an old rock band. But they have a lot of good melancholic music. Zemfira, may be Bilan...there is actually a lot.
go to YouTube and look for Alsu - she's great
