Travel Info Which place would you recommend to visit, St. Petersburg or Moscow, Russia? Travel Tips Let me start off by saying that I've been to both Moscow and St. Petersburg. Hands down, go visit St. Petersburg. It is the cultural and artistic heart of Russia. The architecture and sights are amazing. It truly deserves it's reputation as the Venice of the North. On the other hand, Moscow is not that special. It's kinda cool so see Red Square, St. Basil's, etc, but the rest of the city is an ugly mix of run-down casinos, overpriced stores, and Soviet architecture. Also, it's pretty easy to catch a train between the two cities, if you have the time. Others They are not that far away so I would go to both places. Both are beautiful, full of historic buildings and if you are going to a far away place like Russia try and see as many places as you can. If you can only visit one, go to Moscow. Depending on how many days you have on your trip, you can actually kill 3 birds with one stone. Visit Velikiy Novgorod - the oldest city of Russia (http://eng.tourism.velikiynovgorod.ru/)... It is situated right in between Moscow and St. Pete. You can get to St. Pete from there by bus just in 3 hours and an overnight train will take you to Moscow. I chose to go to Moscow first because it is the capital and I really wanted to see Red Square and the Kremlin. Most people I speak to seem to only want to go to St Petersburg for some reason. Petersburg is more European, which is another reason I chose Moscow. I will be going to Petersburg for the first time this summer though and I can't wait. You could quite easily see them both if you got the over night train between them. I'd recommend going to both, but if you only had time to visit one, St Petersburg would be my place of choice. I'm extremely well travelled and St Petersburg tops my list of favourite cities in the world (closely followed by Rome). Moscow has many interesting things but nothing that really takes your breath away like Catherines Palace and Peterhof do in St Petersburg. Anyone who would recommend going to Moscow instead of St Petersburg obviously either hasn't been to St Petersburg, had something bad happen to ruin their time in St Petersburg or didn't explore St Petersburg to it's fullest. You have a lot less hassels with visa registration in St Petersburg than you do in Moscow (in Moscow it cost me the equivalent of $25US and my passport was taken away to get it done, in St Petersburg it was free and it was done the moment I checked in as I was watching at the checkin counter of the hostel). The police are not everywhere you look in St Petersburg like is the case in Moscow and so so many nice things are around St Petersburg. Peterhof (the Grande Cascade) is one of those things that you must see before you die. The Kremlin is something I'd dreamt about going to for ages, but it was a real let down, Red Square, St Basils Cathedral were really photogenic places, but everywhere you look in St Petersburg is photogenic. Five days in Moscow was more than enough for me, but 7 days in St Petersburg was only just enough and I was rushing around to fit everything in (The Hermitage along could take 2 or more days if you were a real art lover). I'll recomend you to visit St.Petersburg. it's amazing city |
