Travel Info why is this? Travel Tips Here are some possible reasons: 1. Language problems (different alphabet, outside Almaty many locals don't speak even elementary English) and the lack of developed infrastructure for budget tourism (no recognized brands of inexpensive hotels, tourism offices with information in English, restaurants with menus in English, no hostels advertising in English to student travelers), local misconception that foreigner=rich.. 2. Bureaucratic hurdles (getting a visa, getting a registration), perception of it as a corrupted country (honestly, it's at least partially true, although not as bad as shown in Borat). 3. Cultural misconceptions (Borat again) or unawareness of how beautiful it is. 4. Potential security issues for foreigners (a French journalist was abducted and killed last year). Others Go see Borat! I don't know. I just searched it on the internet and it looks beautiful. I will go there the next time I'm in that part of the world. People don't know much about Eurasia and central asia and really only learn about countries they are familiar with through school or the media.
