Russian houses?

What is the common house like in russia?

Travel Tips
It should be noted that the majority of Russians have a relatively small flat somewhere in a city or a town, as well as a country house called "dacha", where they spend their holidays.

The flat blocks are usually pretty large, especially so in major cities. The average flat consists of 1 to 3 rooms, in addition to the kitchen, the toilet and the bathroom (these are usually separated). They usually have a small balcony. The nature of the flats varies greatly, but the average size would be approximately 40-60 square metres. The interior is usually decorated with carpets, the walls with wallpapers, the curtains are often fairly heavy. There is often an abundance of bookcases and wardrobes.

The dacha is usually situated within the limits of 100 to 300 kilometres from the apartment, most often in a village or a separate set of dachas. It consists of a separate house and territory marked by a fence. The fence is usually wooden, and is either high and opaque, or really low and painted in some fancy colour like sky-blue. The most common size of the territory is 600 square metres, but most Russians illegaly attach additional metres by moving their fence inconspiciously. Old ladies usually spend most of the time on their dachas, caring about their orchards. Most Russians, even the poor ones, have a dacha. A rather nice phenomena, if you ask me. However, problems with electricity and water are fairly frequent in villages. The toilet is usually separated from the house itself, as is the shed/garage ('saray'). Some Russians have their dachas situated in long wooden barracks, living alongside other families, but that is not particularly common.

Rich citizens of the Russian Federation often build opulent stone cottages in close proximity of major cities. These are quite expensive. The owners of these cottages are often looked down upon by common Russians, since they tend to believe that it's virtually impossible to buy such a cottage with money earned in a legal way. They usually have a point. Source(s): A provincial flat block: http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/co...

They are just like any other homes in other countries some are rich some are poor.
Most Russians actually live in apartments, so the typical house would actually be an apartment in a high-rise building, or a 4-5 story building if you're going into deep Russia, into the province. These days many build very luxurious private houses and cottages, but its safe to say that those many represent approximately 5% of the total population. Majority still lives in apartments, though sometimes they are as large as a typical American house (square footage-wise).

In terms of the interior, you can check out photos that someone posted earlier. I'd say most of Russians usually invest heavily in nice living room couch, cupboards (where we display china sets or crystal work, like vases) and bedroom sets. Since I have lived in the U.S. for a while and my family does have a house here, I can say that the major difference between Russian apartments and the American-style homes is a lack of formal dining room. In Russia kitchen and eating area are combined, and if there's a family occasion or large gathering of friends, big tables are usually set up in a living room.

And of course, Russian houses, or shall I say-Russian homes, are commonly very warm and welcoming.
