Is it safe for an American to travel to Belarus?

Travel Info
I am an American student studying in Germany and thinking about traveling to Russia, Belarus, and perhaps another country. I can speak German and French (of course English) well enough to get around, but I speak no Russian. Will this be a problem? Anyone out there with a previous experience in Belarus?

Travel Tips
Depends on what you're up to when in Belarus... ;))

Tell you what - start from Poland, and if you'll like it there, especially in Podlasie region, the eastern one, then it's Ok to go further east. Belarusians are known for their hospitality and tolerancy; the country is reasonably well-kept, cities are clean; younger folks mostly speak basic English. On the other hand: worsening economic state already brought prices to the level of Western Europe, state propaganda keeps callin' America The Ultimate Evil (and some people believe it), there's lots of street drinking - with possible anger outbursts to occur.

So, if not to expect much, especially about service - it's quite nice and rewarding. Actually, much better than, IMHO, in Moscow or Ukraine. Be prepared to be lightly overbilled in restaurants and big stores - folks there are always ready to gain on a foreigner. Nighttime is safe almost everywhere - just mind your business and don't get pissed drunk. Have fun?..

And please, PLEASE, don't mess w/that bastard Lukashenko. He's not worth it... Source(s): me native Belarusian, studied in the U.S. and travelled 1/3 of the world

yes... just dont act dumb. i have lived all of the former soviet union. dont be arrogant or act in awe that you are in E A S T E R N europe. most americans who are brave enough to leave their comfort zones in the EU or US normally make a very bad name for those of us who realize that life is just as normal and safe here in the former USSR as anywhere. Just play it smart and don't be dumb. also, don't act like a sexpat. getting it on with a soviet girl, normally results with a fist in the face from her boyfriend.
If you don`t want to make any revolutions there. It`s nice place with wonderful people

Yes it is very safe because Belarus is a harmless country. If you go to Russia first, (I recommend St. Petersburg), and from there you go to Belarus, all you have to do is take one train for an entire night. You won't even noice how fast you will get there because you'll be sleeping. :-)
I recommend going to Minsk.
