Russia: Cultural communication - Most important? |
Travel Info Question Details: I'm traveling to Russia this summer. I'll be teaching English to college kids for two weeks. What do you think is the most important thing that I need to know, or the most important thing I can do to prepare... to show respect for their culture and to communicate effectively? Thanks! Travel Tips Because of modern TV and music, Russian children are quite integrated in international culture. They are clever and modern. Sometimes I saw that foreigners thought that Russians are retrograde and don't familiar with contemporary tendencies. It's a wrong opinion. You should teach them like Europeans, but take into account that most of them do not very religious in comparison with Poles or Spaniards. In Russian schools teacher plays a main role during lesson, and pupils usually don't argue with him. So, if you want to make interactive lessons with a lot of games and discussions, possibly, you should overcome their uneasiness. It will be easy if you will smile, talk to them socially and frequently compliment them. Also Russians like to copy off... (I know that in Europe it is named "cheating"). It is a habit of most of our pupils. Don't punish them very hard :-) Much better to check their knowledge in another way than a common "control work". Another problem of Russians in English language acquisition is a special rhythm of English. Most of European languages have quite similar rhythm, but Russian language is more smooth. Give them special tasks for training the rhythm. I know several native speakers who teach in Russia, they are very satisfied with this work and students. I wish you a good days in Russia. Good luck! Others Don`t drink vodka and just be open minded person http://www.nemtyrev.narod.ru Keep in mind that Russian kids are very very "naughty" and they will not act serious if you don't. Just remember that here in Russia we have very short summer. And very long and cold winter. From my personal memories - it was very difficult (almost impossible) to listen to teacher when there was bright and sunny may day outside. Actually purples don't go to school during summer. they wont respect you if you botch up their language, and pack lots of warm clothing! and always say: "how are you?" |
