What is the Russian name for Kopschak, Crimea? |
Travel Info Kopschak was the orignal name of a town in the Crimea, when the Russians annexed Crimea they changed all the town names to Russian names. Travel Tips As far as I know ( I am a native Russian ) all Crimean towns had Russian names and the first language there was ( is ) Russian for quite a few hundred years . So what exactly did they have to change ? Others Please, check out this link. It may be helpful. http://www.iccrimea.org/place/names2.htm... The only similar sounding name on the list I found was "Koptakil", and it is among extinct villages of Crimea. Dasha from Russia Having been to Crimea twice, and having a Fiance who lives there, I have not heard of Kopschak. However, Kopschak sounds Russian, so I imagine that it is indeed the russian name. However during ancient times many cities went through many name changes. Take for example the Coastal city of Feodosia. It was once theodosia when colonized by the Greeks. When the Kipchaks invaded in the 1230's (kipchaks being of turkish origin known in Russian as "Polovsti" of which there is a village named Kipchak also) It was named Kaffa or Caffa which is where the Black Plague began it's start westward. Later it was renamed Kefe, then in the 1790's was renamed Feodosia by the Russian Empire. In doing some research it may be Bol'shoy Yar (Bolshi Yar) located on the western portion of Crimea, Northwest of Sevastopol. Pretty good from an American huh?!?! Hope this helps :) http://www.fallingrain.com/world/up/0/bo... http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/crimea... http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/kipchak... http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/feodosia...
