Travel Tips
1) It depends on what you eat and if you want to buy made dinner or cook it. People here (I live in Moscow) manage not to starve even though they get about $600 a month - a lot of them get less. Byu food in big stores but not in downtown. In Moscow there are good stores such as Ashan (袗褕邪薪) - some of them are on the border of the city. Cooking will save you a lot of money!
2) Entertainment is expensive here - I mean night clubs. Movies are ok but it's cheaper to buy discs with the movies you like - most often you can buy abot 6 movies on 1 disc and pay about $4 for it. You can buy anything at a cheap price here - you just need to know where to buy it. Talk to local people - they'll tell you.
3) Accomodation might be veeeeeeery expensive in the downtown and just expensive everywhere else. An appartment with just one room a kitchen and a bathroom costs from $800 to I have no idea how much. I mean Moscow. In smaller cities it costs less.
4) Poor people are everywhere. I don't know what you mean by saying poor but usually you can't say looking at a person how poor he or she is. The only exception is drunkies and the homeless. They look very peculiar and can be found anywhere. People who beg for money in the metro or elsewhere might turn out richer than you - it's just their job - so don't waste your money on them. People who really need money will not beg in the streets.
5) People here speak English but not a lot of them. Most English-speaking people are from 20 to 40 years old - no use trying to talk to old ladies :)))
The British accent is not dominant, mostly it's Russian. But, to be serious, we're really taught the British variant. I've managed to get rid of it, however. You'd better make friends with some students of English!

The problem with the foreigners is usually that they don't want to live in the outskirts or they don't want to go to cheap shops... Snobbish. They don't trust the doctors here, don't trust teachers... A lot more people here are well educated than in America. Russia is a nice place to live and people here know how to work.

Hope it'll help. Good luck here. Source(s): I'm Russian

uhhh... i speak russian but i think i can answer a few of those questions.
YES they do speak english in russia but not many and not everywhere. most likely they'll have a british accent.
also it's not that expensive in russia. back in '02 when i went to ukraine i passed russia and we bought some sausages for about 100 rubels, but that is really about $3. and yes you will have stuff cheaper in russia than in here anywhere from medicine to movies that come out earlier there than here or just about anything. moscow is pretty expensive though. and i think the poor parts are farther from moscow but you'll see bums and drug addicts just about anywhere. hope this info helps.
personal experience.
I m from RUSSIA...
1.cost of dinner its about 8-20 $
2.it is not true.....
3.in Moscow i thunk its about 1000$ in a month...in Kaliningrad where i from,its about 500$ in a month.
4.In Russia the poor people is everywhere....)
Before I answer, I just want to note that Russia is a huge country and differs region to region. If you're going to a specific destination, you should indicate that in your question.

1. how much does it cost to have a lunch , dinner in Russia ?

Moscow: Dinner for two in a Japanese restaurant in late 2005 cost me over $80. Excessive, I know, so stay away from Japanese and go simpler. Lunch at Kuryatnik (Russian fast-food chain) should be no more that $4-5.

2. Is everything very expensive in Russia ? if not , what can we buy in Russia at cheap price ?

Moscow: you can buy souvenirs (magnets, wooden spoons) for pretty much the same cost as in the U.S. (few bucks each).
That is relatively cheap. Small accessories, jewelry items (plastic rings etc.) are also cheap, though depends on the are. You can get some very good Georgian wine at Georgia's pavillion of VDNX (1st floor) for a decent price.

3. how much is it for the rental ( ie , 3 bedrooms, one living room, and bathroom)

Moscow: in NYC, such apartment will cost you at least $3,5000-$4,000 a month. Moscow-same or higher. Better to go modest and look for a smaller place, and not downtown, but on the outskirts (subway is pretty fast).

4. where are the poor people in Russia ?

Everywhere, as someone said already. Moscovites are relatively well-off compared to the rest of the country.

5. one more question , do they speak English in Russia?

Young people, 16-35, speak English rather well, and I could say not only in Moscow, but in provinces as well (I am from "deep Russia"). Yet, not every single person you will meet will be fluent or able to understand you. So, I'd suggest learning at least some Russian before going there.
