Is russia a 2nd world or a 3rd world country NOW?

Travel Tips
Russia belongs to the Top 10 developed countries, baby.
It holds 8th or 9th top position (depends on how you count).

If you count nuclear warheads, Russia is Number One.

If you believe Michael Moore, USA is a 3rd world country.

And, dear wild_orchid, US infrastructure is just awful. Electric grid is comparable to Soviet 1960s, roads in some states (notably PA) are broken, water mains in many cities never upgraded since 1930s and break frequently flooding downtowns (I recall 2 in my city), home-building industry is plain retard... Education really sucks! Comparable to Sub-Saharan Africa... And here comes M. Moore with his "Sicko".
Others
They are a second world but to me they more to third world.
2nd (because it belonged to the communist bloc). Even though those terms are outdated since the fall of communism.
In terms of a criminal rate i would rate them close to Brazil, beautiful but not safe at all. In terms of economical growth one of the most fast growing countries beside China. With the current price of Oil and gas, that only helps them grow faster, since they are the largest exporter of those. In terms of number of beautiful women they ahead of the whole planet. Period!
Maybe you mean if Russia is a developed or is a delevoping country. The terms first, second and third world were coined during the Cold War days when the world was divided into the first World that being the US and its Allied, the second being the Eastern Bloc one of which which was the USSR and the third world countries which were more or less in neutral and in Asia.

Russia is a developed country and Moscow is actually one of the most expensive cities in the world to live in. A regular 2 bedroom flat will probably set you back for about half a million dollars or so.
The term "3rd world" is outdated. There are now developed and developing nations.

As far as the comments about Moscow - Moscow, although rated as the most expensive city for foreigners the second year in a row, is not representative of most of Russia. In fact, many people agree that if you've seen Moscow, you haven't necessarily seen Russia.

Hard to say which of the two Russia actually is. Generally speaking, when looking at the bare facts, it seems to most resemble a developing nation in terms of its infrastructure (check out Russian roads for proof), general wealth of average cititzens, average lifespan (very low for males, at around 58yrs), etc.

But it is very quickly growing and, as the source below describes, appears to be a "middle income" nation more than a developing or developed one.

As defined below, however, much of Russia still appears to be closer to a developing nation than a developed one:

Developing nation:
"A country with low levels of well-being, as measured by economic, social, and technological sophistication"

"A developing country is a country with a low income average, a relatively backwards infrastructure and a poor human development index when compared to the global norm. The term has tended to edge out earlier ones, including the Cold War-defined "Third World".

Developed nation:

"A country with high levels of well-being, as measured by economic, social, and technological sophistication."

"A developed country enjoys a relatively high standard of living through a strong high-technology diversified economy. Most countries with a high per capita gross domestic product (GDP) are considered developed countries. Some countries, however, have achieved a (usually temporarily) high GDP through natural resource exploitation (e.g., Nauru through phosphorus extraction) without developing the diverse industrial and service-based economy necessary for "developed" status.
