For culture in StPetersburg the Church of Isak and both summer (Peterhof) and winter (Heremitage) palaces are musts and only 2 blocks away from the Church Vodka museum with English guidance is worth while. I love Kirov museum, home museum preserved as the home of the 1932 party leader assassinated by Stalin a bit further (taxi) away. Beware of pickpocketsl, no other safety worries, agree on taxi prices beforehand and bargain them. If you want to eat gourmet in the evening in StP restaurant named "1906" is excellent and reasonably prized if vegetarian/fish then restaurant "Idiot" right by Moika channel is great. A fun place for beer and snacks is "Lenin's Mating Call" (you read it right) some retro socialist stuff and making fun of the ideology. Peter wanted Russia to become a more modernized nation, and so built a modern city named after himself. Since the 18th century up to the Russian Revolution it was the Russian capital (now Moscow). Before this Peter himself visited the modernized Europe as a common man (at that time emperors and empresses were not a common sight to the common man), learning how to build ships, factories, sciences, and such. St.Petersburg is probably the most beautiful city in the world. It's worth visiting, really. When I was there I was walking all the days. I couldn't stop admiring. Now I can say that It's extremely important to have a good guide who can show you some wonderfull places. In St.Petersburg I met a very good guide. She opened to me the city I would never forget.
