It's a historically European state that expanded eastwards through colonialism. Ethnic Russians are Slavic and purely European culturally and racially, and since they're the dominant ethnicity in Russia, it is European. The majority of population of Russia lives in the geographically European part of this country, too (106 out of 142 millions, according to Wikipedia). P.S. The absolute majority of autonomous republics in Russia are not European, however. They aren't called autonomous for nothing, and they should be viewed separately. Asia is HUGE but a lot of russians consider themselves European, so it's pretty interesting. europe, because Moscow is in Europe. Both. But more belongs to asia then to europe. Asia I think.
