Internet in st.petursburg russia? |
Travel Info I am trying to help a family overseas with a computer but now theres the problem with internet acces i was wondering if any one knows of any ISP in st.petersburg russia and how much does it cost a month ... thanks so much ... this information will be a lifesaver... Travel Tips I am living in St.Petersburg. I pay 400 RUR (15 USD) for an 256 Kb/S access over a LAN. There are plenty of possibilities to get such an access. There are ADSL, ISDN, LAN, Dial-up, WiFi and other last mile technologies. I know a lot of ISPs in St.Petersburg, the biggest ones are: WEB+, Peterstar, NWT(SZT-PTS), Peterlink. My ISP is Eltel. To learn more please refer to the following links: www.wplus.ru www.peterstar.ru www.ptn.ru - this is a state phone operator, they have an ADSL service - AVANTGARD. My girlfriend has such an access. www.eltel.ru - I am connected to this one, over a separate LAN access. If you want to buy a PC here, so it is meaningful to ask by a seller for a bundle - PC+Internet access. Sometimes you can get better price for a bundle. And please don't forget, that the IBM PC compatibles are much more popular in Russia. No Macintosh. To John B: Yes, you are right! You can buy a Macintosh there. But you have to be aware, that IBM PCs are much more distributed in Russia. I would say, that all the schools and universities, a lot of scientific organizations etc. have PCs. It means that you have to analyse first with whom you have mainly to communicate. If with you russian partners, friends, relatives so it is highly recomended to have a PC. Just because you don't need to convert files of speadshets, word proceccors and so one. Furthermore the SW for a PC is much easier to find and to buy in Russia, then for a Mac. But if you have more contacts to you american firm or partners who are using Macs, so its clear - you have to use an Apple Mac. Others There can't be a problem with the internet access in St.Pete! In Moscow it costs from about 500 rub per month - very little - they give you a line and no problem. St. Pete is like Moscow, so it must be the same there. Only in small cities getting a line is expensive. Usually providers put there adds on the doors of the houses. A problem may occur only if it's a small cottage-like house in far-far-away suburb. You could try : www.expat.ru Lots of info in the forums there and in English. Pyotrr Not true that no Macintosh in Russia. They have an Apple shop in Planeta Neptun shopping centre in Marata Road. With a notebook with wifi you can get free access in any Coffee House cafe and in some restaurants like Yakitori. ISP is simply bying a card at most Metro stations or almost any mobile telephone shop. Getting a telephone line if none is connected can be a traumatic experience. |
