What's a nice town in the Sierra foothills?

Travel Info
Have heard of Arnold and Strawberry. What are these like, and any other recommendations?

Looking to rent a house/cabin for the July 4th weekend. We have a young baby so activities will be low-key. Would like to do some easy hikes. I will try to sneak out and spend some of the time fly-fishing if there is a nice trout stream nearby.

Travel Tips
It seems what you're looking for is not in the Sierra foothills, but rather the Sierra Nevada mountains.

Arnold is great, off of Hwy 4, it's secluded, yet not in the middle of nowhere. Arnold lies near Big Trees State Park, which I highly recommend, it's a beautiful place and has a few hiking trails. Strawberry is rather small, but may just have what you're looking for. If you don't mind being even more secluded, check out areas of Plumas or Sierra county. There are miles of trails, tons of lakes, and not that many people at all. Source(s): Sacramento all my life, travel often in the Sierra Nevada. I fish, hunt, and snow ski all the time.

Other Travel Tips
Apple Hill is a nice family oriented place. It's got a small town feel, they have these farmer's market/live music get togethers. Fantastic apples too.

If you want more of like, an actual town with supermarkets and restaurant chains, try Auburn. It still has that small town feel.

Try looking into Murphys. Adorable town with added benefit of wineries!

Your best bet is Nevada City/Grass Valley. There are some guide services to help with fishing here, and the towns are charming places to walk around with strollers & shop. There's even a GREAT baby shop in Grass Valley! Yuba River at the Highway 20 bridge is 25 minutes from Nevada City and is GREAT fishing. In Nevada City, have dinner at Friar Tuck's - you can bring the baby, there's live music and an ice cream shop up the street. Have fun!!
