What are the cheapest places to live in California? |
Travel Info What are the cheapest places to live in California? Travel Tips For housing, the main cities of California are pretty pricy - whether in Los Angeles, the Bay Area, San Diego or even Sacramento.. the housing market is still expensive. A lot of people seeking more affordable homes in southern california have been moving to towns in the Inland Empire -- the western part of San Bernardino and Riverside Counties (still within commuting range of LA and San Diego). For even cheaper housing options, try in the rural areas - either farming towns, or desert or mountain towns. Imperial County (between San Diego and Arizona) is fairly rural, but has some towns, like El Centro, in the desert. Of course, living in the middle of nowhere might be cheaper for housing than city life, but there are drawbacks - gas is probably more expensive, and finding a job you like might be tougher, and general city amenities (like a variety in shopping or dining or entertainment) might be lacking. But I hear El Centro, CA now has a Starbucks... Others there arent any garbage dump Down by da beach, mon! Sacramento is on the lower plane of high The words 'California' and cheap (at least in the financial sense) have never been heard together in a sane conversation. Ever. To correct Yijie22prc's assertion in her answer below that there are actually some inexpensive places in California, sure they may be some "lower priced" abodes in the rural area, but have you checked the median incomes for people who actually live there? If the home prices in Bakersfield is half that of the Valley, it's because incomes in Bakersfield are slashed in half too--meaning, by California standards, both locations are equally UNAFFORDABLE. Besides their are practically zero jobs in the desert so why would anyone want to move there? Also, you spoke of Riverside, California as inexpensive. I don't think so. Have you checked the prices there lately ($500k and up)? The average Riverside resident makes $40,000 a year. The average LA County resident about $65,000. A recent study said they need to make AT LEAST $135,000 a year to afford that mortgage payment over the long term, and that only 1 out of 7 California households can meet that minimum income requirement.
