Are there any inspiring places to see in California?

Travel Info
I'm visiting my friend in California in less than a month. I'll be driving out there with a few of my friends--it's been a planned roadtrip for a long time. We're visiting because my friend has been going through a real rough time. She lives in Sacramento. I was wondering if there was anywhere in California within a day's drive (there and back) of Sacramento where my friends and I could take. Are there any really inspiring or life altering places to see around Sac? Any suggestions would be highly appreciated.

Travel Tips
Oh my goodness yes. You're coming to the right spot if you're looking for great entertainment within a day's ride of Sacramento.

You can start off by taking a tour of wine country and visiting the Napa and Sonoma valleys. They're about a two hour drive away by car, and have some of the most lovely scenery I've ever found. Plus, even if you're not big into drinking, a lot of the wineries are downright gorgeous, and you can find yourself spending a lot of time simply walking around the grounds and enjoying the day go by.

Beyond that, there's always the fun of wine tasting, and you can find reasonably priced gourmet delicacies for snacking or a mid-day lunch much more easily than you can find an overpriced crap hamburger from a fast food joint, or if you're looking just for a unique experience where your every need is attended to, book a couple of tickets on the wine train. It's quite fun as well.

If you're looking for impressive nature, head to Caloveras. It's also a short drive away, where you can walk the trails and enjoy the redwood forests. There's a lot less in the way of gourmet markets and lovely cabernet, but hey... REDWOODS. A thousand tall tree is nothing to sneeze at (unless you have allergies, and then a Claritin will take care of those).

Want a bit of city excitement? San Francisco's just a couple of hours away, too. Go down, walk the piers, and nosh on some crab legs (there are stands with them all over the place) as you look out at the ocean and enjoy the seals basking along the shore. Again, no end of things to do there.

Or, if you're looking for another body of water that makes a big splash, Tahoe's also a short drive away to the East. It can be pretty breath-taking to ride the tram to the top of the mountains whether it's winter or summer, and the view from the top really can't be beat (plus, there are a lot of trails to walk there, as well).

Yeah, okay, I'm starting to sound like a travel ad for Sacramento. The point is, there's a lot of stuff to do nearby, and you can find some interesting things to do in Sacramento, as well (you could, for instance, take an evening cruise on the Delta King and even stay in it overnight as it slowly cruised down river). You've only got to look for a bit. =)
