Crossing the Rockies with a u-haul - suggestions and dangers? |
Travel Info I have to cross the Rockies with a u-haul and I have high blood pressure, I asked and got mixed replies from doctors. Has anyone done high altitude driving with high blood pressure? I do take medication. Any suggestions to a safe route from Sacramento to Kansas City for both me and the u-haul? Travel Tips All routes will be hot this time of year. I recommend that you look to see where the wild fires and forest fires are burning right now, and use that as a reverse guide for which route to take. High blood pressure shouldn't bother you much since you're on medication and you're just passing through the Rockies. If you're used to a low altitude, then the pass near Laramie, Wyoming will be the highest you're apt to get, so long as you avoid the Jackson WY route. Going through Laramie often causes altitude sickness, and it manifests itself in different ways for different people. Some get a backache that just won't go away, or the feeling like you have pneumonia - that ache in your lungs. It goes away once you get over the mountains. I've made the trip several times, with U-Hauls and without. They're pretty safe nowadays and the trip is really no big deal if you stay on the interstates. It's a shame to make a trip like that and not see the great scenery along the way, but you won't see that stuff from the interstates, especially in Wyoming. Good luck, and email me if you have any questions. I've done this lots of times, and settled in the place you probably dread the most. Source(s): I couldn't reply to your email because it said your email addy had not been confirmed, so I am just putting my answer to your email here in the sources section. Here it is: The best route from Sacramento, and the easiest all the way, would be for you to head out on Interstate 80, going east of course, until you come to Cheyenne, Wyoming. In Cheyenne you'll want to turn south onto Interstate 25 heading for Denver. Denver isn't far from the Kansas border, so just about any route you take from there to get to your final destination will work just fine. The highest point you'll cross will be near Laramie, Wyoming, and I believe that the altitude will be somewhere near 8000 feet. From Rawlins, WY to Laramie will probably be the hardest part of the trip, but this time of year it shouldn't be too bad. It gets really windy across there, so just be watchful and pull off if it gets too windy. Wait it out if you have to. If you drove straight through without stopping for anything but gas, you could probably make the whole trip in about 24 hours. So, it isn't even that long of a trip. Take your time, stay cool, rest the vehicles in the shade once in a while and let them cool down, too. Your high blood pressure isn't even going to be an issue, so take your meds and don't worry about that, it's just an unnecessary burden on your brain right now. I have high blood pressure, too, and have made this trip even without any medication, so it really isn't that big of a deal. Just enjoy the amazing scenery, have a good time traveling, and arrive safely. You'll be fine. Other Travel Tips You should worry more about the horsepower under the hood. You will not be travel ling very fast in a U-haul either driving one or towing one. You Will be ok. Just plan your trip as if you did not have high blood pressure. If you are a member of a travel club such as AAA ask them to plan your route for you. Or you can do it your self. There is beautiful scenery along whichever route you take. Enjoy your trip! |
