What is the best time to travel a long drive with little kids? |
Travel Info With us will be a 1yr and a 2yr old. Approx 5 hrs drive. DO you recommend a day or a night drive? Why? Thanks. Travel Tips This depends on how long the trip will be. I find that with my 2 year old, we can drive up to about 4 hours with minor incident (stopping once or twice along the way to get him snacks). I usually play his favorite songs on homemade compilation cds (which seems to keep him a little more complacent). I plan to by the dvd player that rests on the head cushion of the front seats to see if that works. If the trip is longer - like a cross country roadtrip or continental voyage (if you are in Europe), I would try to leave around the childrens' normal bedtime so you get at least 8 to 8 to 9 hours of peace (or at least semi conscious calm) with less need to stop. You can cover more ground more quickly and traffic usually isn't as bad. It is, however, important for the driver to get a good sleep prior to departure. Others Do it at night while they are sleeping We always do it at night so we don't have to stop 6 times for bathroom breaks. They want a snack then they want juice then they have to go potty if you don't go at night. Plus the traffic is way better at night anyway! It's a 6 to 7 hour drive for us at night or a 9 to 10 hour drive mid day! big difference! I took a 12 hour trip with a newborn and a 18 month old. We left before dawn so they would sleep most of the trip. I think that would help as well, right now, with the heat factored in. There's really no good time to travel with little ones.. but that worked out pretty good for us on several occassions. Good luck, enjoy your trip! Day or night ...who cares as long as they are asleep. oh, and no sugar ! =o) Feed them, put comfortable clothes on. Put their favorite songs on the cd player or bring a portable DVD if you car doesn't have one, play games while driving like silly songs and they will enjoy it, next thing you know they will be tired and will sleep. I usually leave my house around 4-5pm when doing long trips. My kids are 13 years old and 15 months and it works like a charm. Depends on the children. What you DON'T want to do is throw them off their respective sleep schedules. A night drive could work, but if you're waking them up to get them dressed and put them in their car seats, you'll be defeating the purpose. You might want to consider leaving around the time you would be putting them to bed, IF they both go to bed at the same time. Or, you could try leaving during the day right before nap time (again, that'll only work IF they both nap at the same time). |
