Sutters Fort is in Sacramento, where John Sutter lived, but it is on one city block in the middle of town. Sutters Mill, where gold was discovered, is about a one hour drive to the east. The Coloma Gold Discovery State Park (google it) contains a re-creation of the mill as well as many historic buildings. The park staff sometimes gives panning lessons. Gold panning can be great recreation and I believe it is allowed in the park - just don't expect to find riches. I grew up on top of the Melones Fault, aka the "mother lode", and in spite of years of trying I never even retrieved more than 1/4 ounce, BUT I had fun playing "49er". No but there are many places with 1 to 2 hours of Sacramento wher you many of these are along the upper Ameican River.
