What are some nice areas for a student to live in around/in Sacramento?

Travel Info
Im going to be moving to the Sacramento area this Fall for graduate school... Im wondering where are the best places for students in this area? Im looking for a place that is safe and has a certain amount of culture, meaning exposure to the arts, coffee shops (open late) and bookstores. Thanks!

Davis is a nice college town. The housing is somewhat expensive, since there have been a lot of "slow growth" measures enacted by various city councils over the years and they tend to require a lot of amenities to be provided by builders. This has resulted in a lot of nice green belts for biking & walking, parks, etc.

It is politically very liberal, although I perceive a slight shift towards the middle in recent years - probably due to higher income, more conservative types moving into a lot of the newer & higher priced housing developments. It is a relatively safe town.

There is a surprisingly diverse "cuisine scene" - lots of good Thai, Japanese, Chinese & Mexican, as well as some decent Italian, Indian, Middle Eastern, Greek, Korean & at least one Afghan restaurant. Plus lots of fast food of all kinds.

There is excellent bus service, including several express lines, to Sacramento, and there is an Amtrak station downtown. And of course lots of coffee shops & bookstores. One drawback is lack of inexpensive shopping, but there is a nice little mall in nearby Woodland, downtown Sac is only 12 miles away & there is a Target store coming soon.

Others
none, illegals taking over, theres your culture
downtown, check out websites, www.cada.net, or neilsen properties. driving around downtown is always the best, the bus is easy to sac state (if that is where you are going) and the bars and restaurants are all within walking distance if you live downtown.
I'd suggest midtown over downtown. Its the area past J St, and past 15th street, stretching eastward.
Depending upon your budget, the following cities are safe and are all close to a variety of shops, cafes, restaurants and entertainment- and just about a 10 minute freeway drive from Sacramento.

-Roseville

-Rocklin

-Folsom

-Natomas (newer areas)

If you live out of the area of the University, ( Folsom, Rocklin, Elk Grove whatever,) you will have to drive, which means traffic and parking. *Warning: Parking sucks at CSUS.
Live in midtown/ downtown. Every 20 mins, you can catch a bus that goes up J street right to Sac State. I think its the 30.
Nielsen has great property listings. You may end up living in a studio, they are cheap and some of the ones in the Victorian homes are gorgeous. It is relatively safe. I lived on 14Th and Gst for 3 years and had to throw rocks at a crackhead only one time.
You can live in the upper grad dorms you know. The University is close enough to downtown to live in the dorms and partake in the culture.
