What are the best & worst areas to live near Sacramento? |
Travel Info I will be moving here from Michigan for school. What are the good & bad areas? Are there any decent parks with trails? What's it like living in greater Sac, CA Travel Tips I've lived in and around Sacramento for most of my 50-plus years. I think it's a great place to live - very underrated and (despite the basketball Kings) unknown. It's hot in the summer, but very mild in the winter and mostly moderate overall. It is growing, with many more suburban tracts covering the surrounding farmland, and the freeways are getting more crowded - but it's still nothing like the mess you find around the San Francisco Bay Area, Los Angeles and many other large urban areas. For an inner city area, downtown and midtown Sac are very nice. Tree-lined streets and lots of restaurants, clubs and eclectic shops, especially on J Street from 21st to 29th streets. Old Sacramento is a fun place that features lots of shops, clubs and restaurants plus the History and Railroad museums - the latter is considered world class. You have to be cautious at night in inner Sac, but it is nothing like what you would usually consider "inner city," for example, like Detroit. Just past midtown you have the nice older neighborhood around McKinley Park, which features a branch of the Sac library, tennis courts, picnic grounds and a rose garden. Other great neighborhoods include the "Fabulous 40s" (40th to 50th Sts., between J St. & Folsom Blvd.), Land Park and River Park (near Cal State U at Sac), and parts of Curtis Park and Hollywood Park are OK, too. There are nice neighborhoods in some of the 'burbs, including Carmichael, Citrus Heights, Fair Oaks, Orangevale and the town of Folsom. My favorite is Fair Oaks, especially old Fair Oaks Village, with its cute, eclectic shops and restaurants and the ever-present wandering chickens, a reminder of its rural past. William Land Park is the jewel of the city park system. It is beautiful and features the Sac Zoo, Fairytale Town for the kids, a nine-hole golf course, picnic/bar-b-que areas, and baseball/softball fields. On Freeport Blvd., it borders Sacramento City College. Plus Capitol Park, surrounding the State Capitol building, is the most beautiful of the 25-or-so U. S. capitols I've visited to date. The beautiful American River Parkway has a bike/walking/jogging trail that runs from the downtown area over 20 miles to Folsom. There are scenic areas for picnics and for simply contemplating nature. And the American as well as the Sacramento rivers offer many opportunities for recreation. As does nearby Folsom Lake. Sacramento is about a couple hours in different directions from San Francisco, Lake Tahoe and Reno. In addition, other lakes within a few hours' drive include Clear, Berryessa, Shasta and Almanor. The Pacific Ocean and the incomparable California Redwoods are a few hours away. You might also consider Davis, about 12 miles from downtown Sac. where I live. It's a nice town with one of the Univ. of Calif. campuses (3rd largest after UCLA and Cal Berkeley), with lots of amenities, including bike and walking trails. An easy commute to Sac, with good bus service. Bad areas: Oak Park, Del Paso Heights, North Sacramento (particularly Del Paso Blvd. & Marysville Blvd.) and Meadowview/South Sac. Stay away! And I wouldn't recommend much of Alkali Flats (just north of Downtown), Stockton Blvd., or Colonial Heights. Others At least you like nature... Sac-Town is a little.... rustic... for the rest of California. not sure..but be sure to come up to Truckee and Lake Tahoe..its beautiful...best beach is Sand Harbor at the Lake...its my all time favorite Folsom, Granite Bay, and El Dorado Hills are about 25 miles East of downtown Sacramento and basically are the only areas left that are worth living in. The rest of Sacramento sucks. Midtown Sacramento is nice, older part of town with lots of big, old shade trees and nice architecture. The American River Parkway/Greenbelt is nice, it has a pedestrian/bike path, I believe on both sides of the river Used to hang out with a friend who lived in Midtown |
