What is the terrain like in Sacramento?

Travel Info
Is it totally flat, or are there any hills? Any kind of biking/hiking trails around the city? I know the coast mountains are close, and the Sierras are about an hour away. I'm looking at a job there, just wondering. Thanks

Travel Tips
I grew up in Sacramento county, along the American River. And I think its a pristine location within itself as well as the surrounding areas. Gambling in Tahoe or chilling in the Bay Area in a couple hours. Rafting on the American is a hoot!! Bring a cooler!! 8o) Fishing the deep water channel for Striper or even the GIANT WHITE STURGEON (Reaching lengths of 14 ft and weighing up to 1400 lbs). Bike trails coming out the yin-yang. 8o) You could even dredge mine the gold on a stream if you want, (Gold is over $600 an ounce now)......well thats all I can think of right now....Old Sacramento has quite a few festivals. All in all....there are worse places one could be...make it..."YOUR PLACE" and your bound to love it!!! Oh and the first comment above about Folsom Lake....HUGE FRIGGIN BASS!!!! lol and BEAUTIFUL!!!! 8o)

Generally flat. BUT....the American River runs right though it. Lots to do near by. Tahoe is about 45min away. San Fran is about 1 hour 45 min away. Sacramento is a very big town, with a beautiful old downtown area. Lots to explore with Folsom Lake near by.
Live near
flat and grassy in the valley ;)
Sacramento is beautiful. It's a small city with a river running through it, the Sacramento river, that is, and is surrounded by rolling hills and mountains.
I went there in '92 with a gf a met in Yosemite national Park and loved it. Man, it is a cool place.
I'm from the Boston area and I love to visit all of California. However, if there was one place I was going to choose to live, it would definitely be Sacramento.

I found the people to be among the nicest I have met. From the State House to the train museum and the shops, I had a terrific time.

Geography

The Sacramento River and its tributaries dominate the geography of the Sacramento Valley. Rising in the various mountain ranges (the various Northern Coast Ranges to the west, the southern Siskiyou Mountains to the north, and the northern Sierra Nevada to the east) that define the shape of the valley, they provide water for agricultural, industrial, residential, and recreation uses. Most of the rivers are heavily dammed and diverted.

The terrain of the Sacramento Valley is primarily flat grasslands that become lusher as one moves east from the rain shadow of the Coast Ranges toward the Sierras. Unlike the San Joaquin Valley, which in its pre-irrigation state was a vegetation-hostile desert, the considerably more humid Sacramento Valley had significant tracts of forest prior to the arrival of settlers of European ancestry. Most of it was cut down during the California Gold Rush and the ensuing wave of white American settlement.

One of the most unique geographic features of the Sacramento Valley is Sutter Buttes. Nicknamed the smallest mountain range in the world, it consists of the remnants of an extinct volcano and is located just outside of Yuba City.
