Just a few general questions on San Antonio....?

Travel Info
I've been doing some internet research on the city, and while everything looks great...I figured I'd ask folks that actually live there these questions.

1- How's the metropolitan economy as a whole?

2- Is it a good place to raise and take care of children? (now, I don't have any yet....just asking on the grounds of the future.)

3- How the mentality of the area? By that I mean....is it open-minded and progressively minded? How's the entrepeneurial mindset of the land (i.e.- is it open to non-corporate businesses?)

4- How high are the crime levels?

5- How's the escrow on homes? Steep or tolerable?

that's all I have....any answers are appreciated! Thanks!

Travel Tips
1 - economy is heavily service and tourism oriented. used to be heavily military, but several bases have closed over the last 10-15 years. there is very little high tech, but slowly growing. valero headquartered there, for one.

2 - great place for kids

3 - very slow pace. the biggest "small town" in which i've ever lived. nice people, bad drivers. diverse, with heavy latino influence.

4 - crime is mid-high in selected areas only. overall probably about low-mid.

5 - homes are very competetive (cheap). you get a big bang for your buck.

hope this helps. if you want more specific info, feel free to contact me.

I lived in SA for 6 years, and my in-laws are still there. This is how I feel about SA.
There is a 50% poverty rate, 35% illiteracy rate. It has one of the lowest high school graduate rates, and one of the lowest college graduate rates. It has the lowest number of park acreage per capitia. It has the highest rate of diabetes. It is always in the top fattest cities. Now, I think it was a great city to live in when we didn't have kids. I don't really think I would want to raise my children there.
There are alot of very traditional views in SA, but there is also a very large Pride Parade held every year.
Housing is cheap. By contrast, SA is at 68%, NY is at 116% and LA is 126% National average.
I never felt like it was a dangerous city. Of course there are bad parts, but over all I never felt like I need to watch over my shoulder.
Well, there you go. These of course, are just my observations and my opinions.
YES BOULDER YOUR OPINION ...I BEEN HERE ALL MY LIFE AND LIKE EVERYWHERE YOU GO THERE WILL BE CRIME...WHERE I LIVE U SEE NO CRIME BUT ALWAYS HEAR OF IT ACROSS TOWN ...I HAVE 4 BOYS AND ALL GRADUATED AND WENT TO COLLEGE AND 2 ARE IN THE MILITARY...
HOUSING CAN BE CHEAP DEPENDS WHAT KINDA HOME YOU WANT...IF YOU WANT TO LIVE IN A NICE NEIGHBORHOOD THEN YOU HAVE TO PAY ALOT MORE THAN LOL CHEAP PLACES ...IF YOU WANT TO GO LIVE WHERE ITS CHEAP WELL EXPECT HIGH CRIME ...(BOULDER MUST HAVE BEEN THERE) ABOVE ALL ITS A NICE PLAY SOME GOOD SOME BAD PARTS OF TOWN LIKE YOU FIND EVERYWHERE .....
