Travel Info Need to purchase a new home, is San Antonio any good and what county should I consider, still have pre teens Travel Tips San Antonio is a great city! I've lived there off and on my whole life, and hope to move back there next year. If you move to San Antonio, there's only one county option--Bexar (pronounced bear) County. San Antonio is smack in the middle of it. The previous poster is absolutely right about north and south SA, and Alamo Heights. The only thing I would add is that south SA also has a lot of gang activity and a higher crime rate than north SA, so I would avoid that area. There are two freeway loops around SA--410 (inner) and 1604 (outer). With preteens, you want to look for something in the north/northwest, either between the two loops, or outside 1604. Alamo Heights does have the best schools in San Antonio, but that area is a bit expensive to live in. On another note, there's a lot to do in SA, especially with kids: Sea World, Six Flags Fiesta Texas theme park, Splashtown water park, Schlitterbahn water park (in New Braunfels, a short drive away, and the #1 water park in the country according to the Travel Channel). And San Antonio has awesome Mexican food! Be sure to try Pappasito's Cantina. Now I'm really homesick! :-) Others San Antonio is divided up into North and South. South San Antonio is largely working class and North San Antonio is more affluent. If you're looking for a diverse urban scene, just south of downtown is the King William district, which has some of the greatest original colonial architecture in Texas. It's in the heart of an arts district with great restaurants, a couple of coffeeshops, and bars within walking distance. Since you say you have preteens, you might be looking for something a little less .. urban. Alamo Heights is a very close-in suburb. Generally pretty wealthy but still plenty of reasonably priced housing. Alamo Heights also has good schools. If you want a brand new home on a cul-de-sac in the exurbs, there is plenty of that on San Antonio's outer beltway, Loop 1604. Stone Oak has some beautiful rolling hills. All suburbs are basically the same, so you know what to expect. Hope this helps. |
