San antonio texas?

I would like to know some input on San Antonio. Just general intakes and experiences about it. We are getting ready to relocate there from FL; my husband will be starting a new job there. I have been unsuccessful finding homes for rent, schools etc. If someone could help me I would greatly appreciate it!!!!

San Antonio itself sucks! Serioulsy listen to people who say live either on the northside near the medical center or one of the outside cities. The solicitors are horrible here so make sure to live in a gated neighborhood. And the drivers are terrible! I honestly would try Dallas or Austin instead.

I HATE driving in San Antone. Drives me nuts. But there's a lot of good places for free wine-tastings.

I live in Austin and would suggest you look into the surrounding small towns like Schertz, New Braunfels, Canyon Lake, for housing and schools. San Antonio is getting more expensive just as Austin is in the inner city. There is a large population that commutes to San Antonio from South Austin due to the housing cost. The climate is awesome in the fall, winter, and spring, but the summer is very hard to take, near or above 100 daily with moderate humidity. I know your in FL and it can get hot, but...you'll see. It's either very wet or very dry, no in between. San Antonio has allot to offer in the culture and entertainment dept. The surrounding country side is spectacular and very different than FL. I'm relocating to N. FL area soon. Good luck to you.
San Antonio is great! We live on the Northwest side of town, which is my favorite part. Its right on the edge of what they call the hill country. There is a lot of development going on all over, so you shouldnt have too hard a time finding a house. Apartments are very reasonable.

What I like most about San Antonio is the cultural diversity. Over half of the residents speak Spanish in the home. In some parts of Texas being hispanic is looked down on, here in San Antonio its celebrated! We have some great Mexican restaurants. (and some bad ones. LOL) Fiesta in late April is a hoot! The Riverwalk area is the most beautiful downtown in the US as far as I am concerned.

There is good shopping. A new area, The Shops at La Canterra, is very upscale with some great stores. There are several other malls, including the River Center down town.

I am afraid I dont know much about the schools, but I am sure someone else can help you. I would contact the chamber of commerce and they will send you more information. I have lived her 5 years and its my favorite city in Texas! Good luck with your move.
san antonio drivers can't drive, downtown gets old fast, and i wouldn't call two ethnicities "diversity." the schools are average though, i've attended northisde schools my entire life.
I lived in San Antonio from 2001 to 2003. I was in my early twenties. My thoughts are...

AREAS: Downtown is very nice. When I first moved there, I would stroll along the riverwalk and think to myself, "Is this really Texas?" Unfortunately, downtown is about tourists and there really isn't a downtown community per se. In fact, so few people live downtown that when I moved there, I only met a handful of people from the "neighborhood".

On the plus side, there's a less discovered neighborhood just south of downtown called King William. There you'll find some of the oldest architecture in the United States, plenty of art galleries, a fine brewpub called Blue Star, a couple of great coffeeshops, and lots of culture. It's unfortunately gentrifying, but such is life.

Just north of downtown is a close-in suburb, Alamo Heights. It's somewhat wealthier than most of San Antonio, and you'll find plenty of great restaurants.

Other than that, most of San Antonio is typical suburban development. Inside "loop 410" is mostly 50s and 60s sprawl, and 70s and 80s to "loop 1604" and by then you're really in the exurbs. If you're into cul-de-sacs, it's great. If you're into culture, it's not.

PROS: Very inexpensive place to live, warm winter weather, friendly people. That last part is so true -- the people all over San Antonio are truly warm, kind, and polite.

CONS: San Antonio is probably the most racially segregated city in the United States. The northside is virtually all-white, the southside is virtually all-hispanic, and the west side is virtually all-black. San Antonio's local government is notoriously corrupt. That combined with a low tax base means city services are not really up to snuff, especially in the non-white parts of town.
