Habeas corpus is Latin for "you may have the body" and is a well known law that was started in England back in the 5th century (Anglo-Saxon times), although it did not become a confirmed law until The Habeas Corpus Act passed by Parliament in 1679.

This law seems to have preceded the Magna Carta, which is the English bill of rights dating back to 1215 and is what the US bill of rights was influenced by.

Habeas corpus is a writ which requires a person detained by the authorities be brought before a court of law so that the legality of the detention may be examined., it is rarley used anymore in the UK, but is still used alot in the US where its most common use is by prisoners after conviction.
