Best smaller school districts north of San Antonio?

Travel Info
I have heard that the NEISD is the best school district on the north side of San Antonio. However, I've also heard that it is huge and overcrowded right now. What are the best smaller districts north of the city? I'm aware that Boerne is a recognized district and smaller. A lot of the houses we're interested in looking at are in Comal County ISD, but I noticed that this district is not recognized, just academically acceptable. Any thoughts on any smaller districts north, northeast and northwest of town would be much appreciated (Schertz, Helotes, Marion, Boerne, etc.).

Travel Tips
Smithson Valley is suppose to have a good school district. They are out towards Bulverde.

Others
Helotes is in the NISD, experiencing many of the growing pains of NEISD.

I've not heard great things about Schertz or Marion. Boerne is definitely attracting the most attention, and commanding higher RE prices because of it. Comal ISD, while acceptable does have some recognized schools, you'll want to look more specifically at that level. HOWEVER, remember things change as administrators change, and school boundaries are redrawn as populations become more dense, as is happening north and northwest of San Antonio.

Curious, why north of San Antonio? The traffic is horrendous, the sprawl has gotten ridiculous, and the areas are becoming more and more generic with identical strip malls dotting the landscape... Many friends that purchased and moved during the great land grab of the last 10 years regret living north of 1604 now.
Its hard to find a good school district in north San Antonio. Due to all of the popuation growth in SA going primarily to the north side. If you consider it, all of the northern SA school districts are experiencing a population growth. Boerne is one of the better school districts to become involved with for now. In another 10 years, Boerne will be in the same situation that north SA is in now. This will be caused by the natural movement of SA growing in a northerely direction.
New Braunfels, Boerne, Comfort, Fredricksburg, Kerrville, Bandera...Schertz is good, but a bit conservative.
