Travel Info How long does it take to tour the Alamo in San Antonio? Travel Tips What you have to remember is that only the former chapel and one part of the barracks remain. The original "fortress" or mission compound extended across what is now part of Alamo St. on the west (where a small remnant of the outer wall is encased in a stone and glass structure--don't feel compelled to donate to the "chaplains" for the homeless that hang out there.) It went across Houston St. to include part of the land that the old post office now occupies. With all of that and the chapel and gift shop--allow an hour. I also recommend the IMAX movie, Alamo, the Price of Freedom that plays across the street in RiverCenter Mall. It's not 100% accurate, but it beats the pants off of the Hollywood versions. I waited 18 years to see it and now regret that. It is one of the few IMAX movies that I think really is worth the fee. To get a much better idea of what mission life was like under the Spanish colonial system, be sure and make time to visit the San Antonio Missions National Historical Park. The main visitor's center is at San Jose Mission. It has a wonderful, free film about the missions. It is a "don't miss it" stop. Source(s): Being married to a certified tour guide really helps. Other Travel Tips probably not even an hour, it is not that big of a building. I'm a Texan. Maybe an hour. The site at the Alamo really only includes the interior portion of the mission and the gift shop. Be sure to check out the Ripley's Believe It or Not wax museum up the street. Hope this helps!
