What are the best places to see and where to eat in San Antonio?

Travel Info
My husband and I are planning a trip to San Antonio in Aug. and we were wondering what we should see/do in San Antonio. We were also wanting to know some great places to eat, esp. non-touristy places.

Travel Tips
For me and my family we think that sea world is great, Others have mentioned the Alamo but there is also the Missions, We have a semi-pro baseball team and they should be playing in Aug. and the Spurs should be starting back up by then. In that is is august I would spend a day out at one of the many lakes around San Antonio for my family we would go to Medina Lake. You asked about a place to eat that isn't touristy. Where we don't go is to the river walk it is very expensive, it is OK if you have really deep pockets, I don't we usually go to the Pander express, Sea Island, Barnacle Bill's, and we also like the Golden Corral. Welcome to San Antonio have fun while you are here.

THE RIVER WALK the mall next to the river walk. the alamo. The resturant on the river walk. maybe ripleys belive it or not close to the alamo.
La Cantera is a nice mall the check out. Very upscale. The Riverwalk, the Alamo, Fiesta Texas, Seaworld. Right now and thru the weekend Fiesta is going on downtown.
No trip to San Antonio would be complete without seeing the Alamo, the Riverwalk, and the missions. Past that, Market Square and La Villita are also maravelous as well as the Botanical Gardens. Actually some of the very best places to eat ARE the trouristy places! Mi Tierra's in Market Square is a great place for entertainment AND food!
The very best mexican food restaurant in San Antonio recently opened. RIO MAMBO! (Tex Mex y mas!) It will spoil you forever for mexican food.
Other than Alamo and the Riverwalk, which will be pretty packed in August, I would also recommend the Tower of the Americas, the Institute of Texan Cultures (both just on the eastside of downtown), the Pearl and Lone Star Breweries, the Missions Trail on the southside, Ft. Sam Houston army post, the AF bases (Lackland and Randolph), the Natural Bridge Caverns to the north...and since you might be heading that way you have the outlet stores in San Marcos, TX about 30 miles north.

For food, you pretty much can't go wrong anywhere in San Antonio, but I would recommend Taco Cabana and Chacho's for everyday Tex-Mex, La Fogata, and O'Grady's and Bill Miller's for BBQ. Ding How is good place for Chinese, and it is a San Antonio institution as well.
First of all bring cool clothes. August is the hottest month out of the year, here in SA. You definitely want to hit the Riverwalk. It will be a bit cooler down there but still blazing! While you are here, besides the touristy places, you should drive up IH10 to Fredericksburg and check out the hill country! San Antonio has a great many places to see and experience. If you are looking for good Mexican food you can take your pick of all different restaurants, one of our favorites is La Fonda on Main. It is a bit off the beaten course but usually isn't too crowded and their food tends to be a bit more authentic, but not overly sauced! Most other types of restaurants that my husband and I like to eat at are the touristy restaurants on the river, Paesanos has great Italian food, Boudros is delicious! I hope you enjoy your stay and make sure you are staying someplace with a pool to cool off at the end of the day!
