Does san antonio have de facto segreation patterns? |
Travel Info is de facto segreation still in san antonio, texas cause west side and southside are largely hispanic areas and east side is mostly black area and northside is mostly white Travel Tips If you knew a little bit more about our great city and the demographic you would understand that there used to be neighborhoods close to down town for reasons that would be apparent such as the near West side. There were a number of families that lived in that area as they worked down town and around at the colleges, hospitals, stock yard, meat packers, rail road, Kelly Field (Army later Air force base), hay market, etc. Even today there are some of the old families still living in their grandparents homes on the near West side, but even that is changing and where there used to be some old very small house now stands a lovely home. I have lived on the West side of San Antonio for most of 35 years, some of my neighbors are black, some are Latino, and some are white. I live on a corner so I have only one next door neighbor and he is a doctor and his wife is a Geneticist they are white across the street She is a school teacher and he is a contractor they are Latino, behind me is a Black couple, she is a Social Worker and he works for the Postal Service. I have great neighbors and have no intention of moving and will be upset when one of them moves. Why do you feel so threatened by multiplicity of ethnicity and race? Please give us the answer in additional information. Note; The next time you have a coke and a bag of corn chips remember that they originated from the near West side. A old man would make them up in the morning and bring them to the stock yards and sell them in the mornings. Lay's bought them from him Others It's not about segregation. Not that many years ago, the west side of downtown flourished with peddlers and produce marketers that were mostly of mexican-american heritage. They naturally lived nearby in the west side neighborhoods. After the establishment of suburban malls and the explosion of housing in the outer areas. The inner city, like most in large cities, started becoming depressed and falling prey to criminals that took advantage of those weaker than them. During the cold war, many mexican-americans were able to make a decent living at the many military bases in the city. They then moved into the newer neighborhoods being built farther west. If you really look at the neighborhoods in the near east-side, you can see that at one time, these houses were probably very upscale for the period. Unfortunately, the trade of drugs, prostitution, and larceny forced all that were able to move out of the area. There's no doubt that San Antonio has suffered from the same disease of prejudice and oppression that all cities do. Many people though, from all areas and races of the city, have been able to overcome these obstacles and become succesful, and in some cases famous. I was raised on the far west side of San Antonio. Regretably, because of my job, I no longer live in Texas. I have seen and lived in a number of cities in the U.S. But San Antonio, with all of its ill's, in my opinion, is the best, most unique and dynamic city in the United States. Yes, except that Hispanics are pretty much spread out through out the city. The only parts that are still mostly white would be outside 1604 on the Northside such as Bulverde and Smithson Valley. However, even Boerne has a large and growing Hispanic population. I live here. It's a great city. |
