San antonio does it have de facto segreation? |
Travel Info does san antonio have this type of segreation and is it true most of the west side sanatonio area is hispanic? Travel Tips Stephen you sent an e-mail earlier today and ask this same question. I will answer you here. If you want to say that a few blocks on the near west side are "de facto segreation" I am not sure that that could be referred to in this way. The reason that most live in the area that you speak of is two fold, (A.) This is the area of Victoria courts, In a town/city of 58 % Hispanic It is reasonable that the majory of folks that live there are going to be hispanic. (B.) many of the folks that live in the area of the near West Side are now living in Grandma's old house, as did their parents before them. No one has forced them to live there and further more they have a choice to live any place in this city that they want too. If in your mind that the folks that don't live with in a few blocks of down town but live in the west side but a little bit further out aren't part of the west side you are just wrong. There is Westwood village, Meadow Village, Rainbow Hills, Meadow Village 2, Heratage, Heratage Farm, Heratage North West, Adams Hill, Heratage Park and maybe another 40 or 50 more subdivisions on the far west side. Most of these neighborhoods are so mixed it is almost unbelieveable. Other cities could take lessons from San Antonio about how to get along. Do I think that there are people as individuals that are jerks, Yep! Most folks are pretty nice if you just give them a chance. Hispanics are the majorty of the population of San Antonio and if there was any segreation then it would be by the hispanic against the Whites and the Blacks, but I haven't seen it. My US Congressman is Hispanic, My state congress people are Hispanic, my City councilman is hispanic , and I helped him to get elected. My daughter is married to a Hispanic, My son is married to a Hispanic. send me an E-mail and tell me in it where or why you feel this way. Others San Antonio isn't segregated, there are a majority of Hispanics throughout Texas and most of the Western part of the US. Many may choose to live on the west side just as Asians live in northern Austin, but certainly not forced to live there. I live in a part of Pasadena that is mostly Asian and Hispanic, full of wonderful places to shop, interesting people and great ethnic restaurants. Haven't you asked this question before? You seem to really lose sleep over this. I suggest you move there and then maybe you'll get smarts and some sleep. No it's not true. People here live where they live based on three things - 1. Economic means. Low income people do NOT live in the Dominion but can be found in well to do Alamo Heights area. On the other hand you can also find very nice homes and properties in every section of town-even in the "poor area". 2. - Familiarity. Some people grow up in one area and remain there. 3. Free choice. I've probably left other reasons out also but I hope you get what I'm trying to say. I can't comment on other cities but I definitely can about S.A. By the way I am "white" and have lived and worked in every side of San Antonio with no problems. Samuel, are you hispanic and feel forced to live on the West side? My boyfriend lived on the West side and he loved it there, but he spent a lot of time with me and I live on the Northside. I went to college on the Westside and loved it, but my family lives on the Northside and I am more comfortable where I grew up just as he is more comfortable where he grew up. But, when we go out, we go to the Southside and to the downtown areas as we met on the Southside and La Tuna is one of our all time favorite places. At La Tuna, you have a mixture of mexican and other latinos, white of various cultures and black as well as mixed. We all get along. We just love a good party. Well, yes...as with every large city in the United States with a past of segregation, certain areas of S.A. will be largely hispanic, black or white because their family roots are based there. There is even a Polish pocket of San Antonio people are not aware of where my family settled. And an Italian pocket which has pretty much died out. I believe San Antonians are friendly, good people without prejudice. We all get along juuuust fine. There are always some prejudiced nuts. But overall, as far as Texans go...San Antonians ROCK!!! |
